Longtime Local Legend Jerry Warren Announces Retirement

An older man in a red jacket with a "Nordica" ski in his right hand stands against a snowy mountain backdrop. He wears glasses and smiles, looking upwards. The jacket has "Sundance" and other patches on it. Pine trees and snow-covered slopes are visible behind him.

After 56 years of involvement, Warren skis forward into his next chapter.

SUNDANCE UT, 27 March 2023– Sundance Mountain Resort has announced the retirement of Jerry Warren, their tenured Director of Skiing. Jerry has served in several different positions since first coming to Sundance in 1967 including Ski Instructor and Director of Mountain Operations.

The principles and curriculum he’s developed are responsible for teaching millions of skiers and hundreds of coaches the finer points of the sport. In 1974 he began traveling the world to teach and present to coaches the “American” style of skiing. Jerry changed the narrative by emphasizing how skiing should be taught in a way that is “fun” and “athlete-centered” as opposed to teaching it in an overly complicated and technique-driven style.

In 2009, the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA) presented Warren with its highest possible achievement, the “National Lifetime Achievement Award.” From the thousands of instructors who have participated in PSIA over its 60+ year history, Jerry was the 10th-ever recipient of this award.

He co-authored the organization’s two teaching manuals and is the primary author of PSIA’s alpine ski manuals which are still prominently used in today’s ski industry. Warren has also written for leading ski publications including SKI, Snow Country, Powder magazine and has been featured in many skiing films including Warren Miller’s “The Color of Skiing.”

Homing in on his love for people, place and learning, he has utilized his “home base” principle of see it, feel it, understand it in ski instruction and beyond. His students and fellow employees have reported that he never misses an opportunity to thoughtfully acknowledge an individual’s strengths and offer recommendations when possible, to ultimately inspire improvement.

“Jerry’s contributions to this resort and the sport of skiing are legendary.” says Sundance’s president Chad Linebaugh. “We are very fortunate that Jerry chose to make us the home base of his teaching legacy. The positive impact he has made on Sundance and ski schools across the country have benefited multiple generations and will stretch decades beyond his retirement.”
