SUNDANCE, UTAH (March, 2009)—The Sundance Summer Theatre presents, in partnership with Utah Valley University, the world’s longest running musical, The Fantasticks. The production will be at the Eccles Stage and marks the second year of the return of this much-loved event to the Sundance outdoor theatre.
“Last year marked the return of the Sundance Summer Theatre to Sundance Resort. We are happy to continue our partnership with Utah Valley University to bring a new production to the outdoor stage for the second consecutive year. We are especially excited to bring a musical to the outdoor stage and one that is so popular with audiences,” commented Chad Linebaugh, Sundance General Manager.
The original production of The Fantasticks ran off Broadway for 42 years with 17,162 performances, becoming the world’s longest running musical. The popular play centers around two fathers who, in an effort to make their children fall in love, erect a wall between their houses to keep them apart “since children never do what you want them to.” The plot works and the young couple fall in love only to discover their fathers’ scheme. As a result, the two strike out into the world separately to find their own paths, which eventually lead back to one another more worldly wise and mature.
The production of The Fantasticks will appear against the backdrop of Mt. Timpanogos, beginning on July 31st and ending with a final performance on August 22nd; performances will be held each Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights over these dates.
“The UVU School of the Arts and Department of Theatre anticipate a wonderful second season of collaboration with Sundance to bring summer theatre to the region” commented Kathie Debenham, UVU’s Interim Dean of the School of Arts. The department carries a mission that resonates with that of Sundance Resort. “Last year, audience members told us again and again, how thrilled they were to be back in the beautiful Sundance mountain setting to see high quality family-oriented theatre. They also expressed delight at the partnership with the UVU Theatre Department. We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Sundance and invite all who came last summer to join us in August for The Fantasticks—and to bring their friends and neighbors to share the Sundance/UVU magic.”
In addition to UVU, Sundance Resort will also partner with Cornerstone Technologies. This Orem-based company has a long tradition of supporting the local community in a number of charitable endeavors while providing world class technical support to many members of the local corporate market. Cornerstone is committed to providing support for the performance as well as allowing for educational opportunities for Utah Valley University students who are participating in the program.
The play will begin at 8:00 PM with the doors opening at 7:00 PM. Group tickets are $15 per person for groups of 20 people or more. Individual tickets are $18 per person. All tickets are general admission.
Group tickets go on sale March 30th and may be purchased by telephone only. Please call toll free 866-571-3379 between the hours of 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.
